Breaking the Chains Psychological Slavery Institute

A Philadelphia Institution for Mental Liberation

Our Foundational Mission

Welcome to the Breaking the Chains Psychological Slavery Institute, a center dedicated to confronting the enduring legacy of historical trauma on the African-American psyche. Our work is rooted in the conviction that true liberation begins in the mind.

The foundation of our mission stems from the powerful 1976 publication, Chains and Images of Psychological Slavery. The Institute maintains that the centuries of African enslavement in America are not merely a distant chapter but a profound historical trauma that persists today. We frame this enduring effect as a form of post-traumatic stress syndrome on the collective mind of African-American people—the persistent “ghost of the plantation.”

Our Core Curriculum: From Insight to Action

While the original work offered crucial insight, we recognized that insight alone doesn’t guarantee freedom. Our research showed that many accepted the reality of “mental slavery” but believed it was permanent. This urgent need for a path to healing spurred the development of our core curriculum, Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery. This work moves the focus from simple recognition to active intervention.

What We Do Description
Establish the Link We provide the definitive framework linking contemporary psychological and communal issues directly to the historical trauma of slavery and its aftermath.
Refocus the Energy We pivot from external blame to internal healing and psychological restructuring. Our goal is the complete repair of the collective psyche.
Provide the Blueprint Our key contribution is outlining clear, actionable steps necessary to eliminate the “ghost of the plantation.”

We believe that the final, most crucial stage of liberation must be mental. What remains to be accomplished for our collective freedom can only be achieved by ourselves.
